There were some who thought that Blue Valley West and McPherson High might meet for the championship of the 50th annual McPherson Invitational.
Instead, they’ll have to settle for playing for fifth-place honors.
West had lost Thursday to Derby in a double-overtime dilly, but totally obliterated Carroll 72-41 in Friday’s Sunshine Bracket to earn a date with McPherson, a showdown that in most years would be a main eventer.
West’s defensive length was nightmarish as Carroll, for the second game in a row, struggled mightily on the offensive end. The Golden Eagles managed just seven first-quarter points and 15 for the half as they were nearly doubled, 31-15.
The second half was just as dominant for the Jags, who put up 35 more points.
Blue Valley West's Blaise Gammon once again put up monster numbers as he's a cinch All-Tourney performer. Coming off a 34-point opener against Derby, he scored 26 points against the Golden Eagles by making 11 of 13 shots and pulled down eight rebounds. Connor Kaiser and Ryan Ralston chipped in with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Matt Price again was much of the Carroll offense, scoring 14 points as he made 7 of 11 floor shots. The Golden Eagles will play Buhler at 1:30 p.m. Saturday for seventh place.
