McPherson College cross country and track and field coach Cameron Magnall is hitting a home run in recruiting locally.
Magnall, who already has a definite McPherson High influence on his roster —including school-record-breaking Kaley Kinnamon — added another Bullpup Monday with the signing of Lauren Wankum to a letter of intent.
Wankum, who transferred to McPherson last year from Manhattan, is a long distance runner who has a best of 6:00 in the 1,600 and 16:36 in the 4K, while turning in 12:53 in the 3,200.
Wankum said she chose McPherson because of the small-school atmosphere as well as the friendliness of the coaching staff, plus family and friends can watch her compete. She will major in accounting.
“We’re doing a very good job this year of getting some of the talent from Mac High, which is always good when it’s your local high school,” Magnall said. “I think she is going step in and contribute right away as a freshman. I think she showed a lot when she was in Manhattan, then when she came here to Mac. I think she’s really going to step in with our training program and contribute right away. She gets along with our team already really well.”
Wankum, whose Bullpup teammate Ivanna Moyer recently signed her Mac letter, is expected to run the 1,600 and 3,200 for the Bullpups this year, along with her younger sister Christina.
Lauren is the daughter of Nikki and Phil Wankum.
