MHS bowlers burn up the lanes

WICHITA — McPherson High’s streaking bowling teams put up more huge numbers on Tuesday, but this time it came on the road where conditions are generally more difficult.

The Bullpups swept a triangular from Augusta and Wichita Independent, improving on their already lofty numbers.

The boys piled up 2,641 pins and did receive a push from Augusta, which scored 2,488. Wichita Independent was a distant third with 1,851.

Joel Morey had a huge 677 day, including games of 247 and 258 as he overcame a slow start. Jeff Reed had a three-plus 200 on the day, including a 246. Newcomer Carl Frazier had his best day as a Bullpup with 655, which included a pair of 200-plus games.

MHS coach Herb Halinski said he’s come to expect Morey’s performance, but was really happy for the support he received.

“Carl and Jeff were both outstanding today. Austin Mitchell had a good day,” Halinski said.

Crystal Nutter’s 648, which included games of 237 and 228, paced a 2,315 total for the Bullpup girls in what turned into a dual with Augusta, which scored 2,172.

Like Morey, Halinski said he’s come to expect only excellence from Nutter. Mayce Nightingale started off with a monster 254 game, while Jasmine Wann showed signs of returning to her old form.

All in all, a good day.

“It was easy to get to the pocket, but pin carry was difficult,” Halinski said. “They did a pretty good job on spares, but there is still a lot of work to do to start getting ready for regionals and state.”

MHS returns to Starlite Lanes Friday to entertain Circle. The action begins at 3 p.m.
