McPherson High’s wrestling team basically was assured of winning two matches here Thursday before it even stepped on the mat.
In what turned into a triangular on Senior Night, Rose Hill and Wichita Trinity both brought only a handful of wrestlers, leading to comfortable Bullpup wins.
MHS defeated Rose Hill 48-30, while routing Wichita Trinity, 60-18.
“The team continues to improve,” MHS coach Doug Kretzer said. “We were aggressive tonight in both matches. We’ve been hit by some illness this week, so we had quite a few of our junior varsity wrestlers get the opportunity to step up and get some varsity mat time tonight.”
Kretzer said it was more about the final home match for his dedicated seniors — Todd Graber, Jose Gloria, Addie Lanning and SueAnn Buster.
“The senior recognition tonight was great,” Kretzer said. “Todd, Jose, Addie and SueAnn have been great team members who’ve had an important impact on our team in the last four years. I always enjoy Senior Night, reflecting on the transition from their freshman year to the young adults they have become.”
On the mat, Kretzer was pleased with heavyweight Michael McKinney.
“Michael McKinney had a really good night, both of the kids he wrestled were strong, physical heavyweights and he controlled both matches in route to pinning both,” Kretzer said. “Michael has really come a long way this year. He’s getting better each week and he’s wrestling with confidence.”
