The final score indicated a relatively close game, but you never had the sense that Olathe East was in any trouble Friday night in the consolation round of the 19th annual Mid America Classic.

The Hawks were a 38-30 winner over Gardner-Edgerton, but it was as close as a five-point game with 2 minutes remaining.

The Hawks, now 6-6, take on another 6-6 team, Wichita Northwest, at 3:45 p.m. Saturday for fifth, while the Trailblazers (4-8) go up against Hays (0-12) at 2 p.m.

Olathe East was up 25-15 at the half as Gardner-Edgerton appeared to have used up all its best play in its narrow loss to No. 2 seed McPherson High less than 24 hours earlier. The Trailblazers made some jabs at the deficit, but the Hawks never wavered.

Regan Stone's 13 points led the Hawks and Molly Taitt chipped in with 11. The Hawks had a nice handle, turning it over only 10 times.

The Blazers, who made only 9 of 31 shots, were led by Angeliece Tucker and Cassidy Androff with eight points apiece.
