McPherson College’s basketball teams face a supreme challenge Thursday night when they snowplow down to Wichita to take on the Friends Falcons, weather permitting.
The women play at 6 p.m., the men at 8, with 96.7 KBBE FM coverage beginning at 5:45.
The Mac women are 4-8 in the KCAC and 8-16 overall, having lost 10 of their last 11. They are still in pretty good shape to secure a playoff spot, which go to the top eight finishers. The Bulldogs are two games up on ninth-place Saint Mary (and hold the tiebreaker by sweeping the regular-season series) and three games up on last-place Bethany, which they still have to host later this month.
Friends basically is playing for second place as it’s 9-3 on the year and tied with Tabor for second, both teams being three games back of 12-0 Southwestern. Overall, Friends is 18-6.
In the men’s game, the Bulldogs will try to spring an upset as they enter 5-7 in the KCAC and 12-12 overall. Friends is in must-win mode, as it’s 9-3 in the KCAC and a game back of co-leaders Sterling and Bethany.
When you talk Friends, you talk Joe Mitchell. The Wichita native leads the country in scoring with a 32.7 average, but Colton Rausch also is dangerous at 14.7 and 3-point Zach Nelson chips in with 11.2.
This is a tough stretch for the Bulldogs, who are coming off a loss at Sterling after having upset Saint Mary. After the game with Friends, the Bulldogs host always strong Tabor Saturday on Pink-Out Night, as all fans are urged to wear pink to promote Breast Cancer Awareness.
