DODGE CITY — The 150-mile ride on a bus that had the heat go out Friday could have had something to do with the McPherson High girls’ 9-of-34 effort from the field.

But as hot as they were from the foul line, you would have thought the bus was a sauna.

MHS converted 19 of 24 free throws, which was the difference in a gutty 40-35 victory over Dodge City.

“We were able to get to the line, especially in the second half and knock them down pretty well,” MHS coach Chris Strathman said. “Overall that was a big key. It wasn’t a very pretty win, but it was a win nonetheless after a long road trip against a 6A school. It was cold (on the bus). We could see our breath.”

Abby Pedersen made her first nine from the stripe before missing her only attempt with .7 seconds left in the game.

“She’s really knocking them down this year,” Strathman said. “She’s been on a good roll for us, from the line especially.”

MHS appeared to have the game in hand, up 20-10 with 2 minutes left in the first half. But in the blink of an eye, the Red Demons wiped out all but two points of that lead and they continued to strike in the third quarter, leaving the period with a 31-28 lead.

But Madison Hoffman’s four points early in the fourth quarter got MHS going, with her last two giving the Bullpups a lead they would never give up. There were a few anxious moments later, but MHS made five free throws in the final 44 seconds.

Janae Barnes was the only other Bullpup in double figures with 10 points and no Red Demon hit for double digits.

MHS improved to 9-5 overall and has a huge week coming up, hosting Winfield on Tuesday, playing at Andale on Thursday before returning home Friday to play El Dorado, which is the final regular-season home game and “Think Pink Night.”

The MHS JVs were a 44-37 winner as Paige Schmidt and Emma Yowell’s eight points apiece led a balanced attack. The freshmen triumphed 37-25 behind 12 points by Kamryn Collins.
