DODGE CITY —McPherson High boys coach Kurt Kinnamon sent his assistant Gordon Peck out to handle the press Friday after the Bullpups’ 51-37 victory over Dodge City.

Kinnamon probably wanted to check and see if his team was still in one piece after bodies were littered all over the court in the slam-bang contest that probably produced a multitude of bumps and bruises.

After sprinting to a 19-3 lead, the game’s doubt never was in question. But as time passed, play got rougher and rougher and Kinnamon finally decided enough was enough and pulled his starters, hoping the MHS backups could avoid the mayhem as much as they could.

“That’s as rough of a game as I can remember,” Kinnamon said in his one brief comment.

Drew Pyle scored 11 of his game-high 16 points in the first half to get the Bullpups off and running. Dodge City eschewed its customary 3-2 zone at the start for a man-to-man defense, which proved to be a mistake.

“They fought hard and at times it didn’t look like basketball,” Peck said. “We’re going to have to play better. We’re going to have to handle those situations a little better.”

Kinnamon agreed with his assistant, noting MHS can’t afford to shy away from contact or teams will continue to rough up the Bullpups

Kyler Kinnamon added 11 points for MHS, which led 29-14 at the half and 44-22 after three quarters.

“We’re trying to develop a little bit of a bench and we’re struggling to do that right now,” Peck said.

MHS had to go much of the way without Peter Horton, whose back flared up and it wasn’t helped that he was banged around like a pinball. Ryan Horton was plagued by fouls and exited the game early in the fourth quarter. Still, the Bullpups prevailed to win handily, their 12th success in 13 games.

The JVs lost 53-44 despite 17 points by Avery Gabel and 11 by Spenser Wine. The freshmen secured a 49-41 victory as Caleb Spaich tossed in 16 points and Brock Malm added 12.

MHS is home Tuesday for an important AVCTL game against Winfield.
