CEDAR HILL, Texas — McPherson College’s baseball team kicked off the 2014 season Saturday losing a pair of close games to Northwood University.

Mac led the opener 1-0 until the fifth when Northwood struck for four runs, then added another in the fifth for a 5-1 triumph.

The Mac bats were quiet, managing only five hits. Austin Russell and Tom Potter had two hits apiece. All of Bulldog hits were singles.

Nolan Huelsmann took the loss, though he allowed only one earned run as an error keyed the four-run fifth inning.

Northwood completed the sweep with a 4-3 victory. Mac again had a 1-0 lead before it got away. Down 4-1, Mac scored a run in both the sixth and seventh innings to make it interesting.

Russell had two more hits and Mac again had only five as a team. Again, all were singles.

Scott Hughes took the loss.

The two teams are playing another doubleheader today as the Bulldogs take advantage of the Texas weather to get out of the snow.
