SALINA — The McPherson College women’s tennis team opened its 2014 campaign against the Baker University Wildcats at the Genesis-Health Club this past Saturday.

Mac came in confident and felt prepared, but was just edged out of the victory by two key tie-breaks. Baker defeated the Lady Bulldogs, 5-4.

In doubles, MC's top team of Brooke Vorhees and Nichole Vorhees had little trouble dispensing their opponents 8-1, while Baker was able to take advantage early in the No. 3 doubles position staving off a Bulldog comeback to win 8-4. With the score tied 1-1 the senior pair of Kara Wright and Ashley Allmon battled back from down 2-5 to eventually tie the score up and force a tie-breaker. In the tie-breaker, Baker was able to hold steady and grabbed an early break to win the tie-break and give the Wildcats a 2-1 advantage going into singles play.

In singles the 'Dogs came out ready with their top two singles players as both Brooke and Nichole Vorhees cruised to easy victories 6-2, 6-2, and 6-1, 6-1, respectively. This gave the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead.

BU would quickly tie up the match again with a win at the No. 6 position making the score 3-3. Junior Brittany Gourlay gave the lead back to Mac with her convincing win at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-1. Wright fought tough but was unable to secure the point for the Bulldogs at the No. 4 singles position making the score even again at 4-4. Allmon came back from a slow start in singles losing the first set 2-6 and rebounded to take the second set 6-4 to force a third set tie-break. In the tie-break Allmon fell down early and wasn't able to recover to give the win to her opponent and Baker University losing 10-6.

"Although this was a tough first loss for our team, we are confident that we will have a much more successful season this year,” Mac coach Jeff Benito said. “Next week we will have two more players join the lineup to make us that much tougher to beat. I was very impressed with the girls' energy and enthusiasm during the whole match."

Mac is at Hasting Saturday.
