ARLINGTON, Texas  — The Bethany College baseball team and Rogers State hooked up for a Saturday twinbill.

The Hillcats won the opener, 3-2.

The Swedes grabbed a 2-1 advantage in the top of the fourth on a two-RBI hit by senior Jordan Geiger, scoring senior Christian Ornelas and junior Nick Ceccarelli.

Rogers State regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth, tacking on two runs. Bethany made a key stop in the bottom of the sixth, holding the Hillcats scoreless with runners on second and third. However, Bethany was unable to rattle the bats late in the game.

Junior Clayton Cozzitorto got the start on the mound for the Swedes, throwing 5 2/3 innings. He recorded eight strikeouts and three walks, allowing six hits and three runs, one of which was earned. Sophomore Ryley Ross pitched in relief, retiring one batter.

Geiger led the Swedes’ offense, going 1 for 3 with two RBI. Lucchesi tallied two hits on the night as Ceccarelli and senior Pablo Contreras added one hit each. Ceccarelli and Ornelas scored one run each. Lucchesi had eight putouts and two assists as Geiger tacked on seven putouts. Ornelas recorded three assists and two putouts while Ceccarelli added two assists.

"We came out a little flat and had a defensive lapse in one inning of game one," Bethany coach Andrew Bartman said. "Anytime you only score in one inning of a ballgame you have a small chance of victory.  Clayton Cozzitorto was the tough-luck pitcher that gave us a quality start yet still took a loss."

Senior Dan Eck took the mound for Bethany in game two, throwing a complete-game shutout 6-0 win. He allowed five hits in seven innings pitched, recording seven strikeouts and one ball.

Bethany took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Lucchesi scored on an Erik Pederson sac fly, and Contreras and Ramirez scored on a double by Ornelas.

After holding the Hillcats scoreless through six, the Swedes extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth as Contreras, senior Nate Estores, and junior Sammuel Ramirez scored on an Ornelas double deep down the left field line.

Ornelas led the Bethany offense with five RBIs on a 2-for-4 performance while Pederson tacked on one RBI on one hit. Ceccarelli went 2 for 4 as Estores added a 2-for-2 showing. Contreras and Ramirez tallied two runs each, as Estores and Lucchesi added one apiece. Geiger tallied 10 putouts and two assists as Lucchesi had eight putouts and one assist. Ramirez tacked on two putouts and three assists while Ornelas added three assists.

"In game two, Dan Eck was tremendous in throwing a complete-game shutout," Bartman said. "Our bats woke up and Christian Ornelas had a huge game. It's always great to not only get a win, but one from a quality opponent like RSU. I look forward to the series-clinching game tomorrow morning."

The Swedes are currently 4-2 overall. The two teams are playing a single game today.
