More than $7,000 was raised Saturday during the “Swim Their Tails Off for Mija” fundraiser at the McPherson YMCA.

Swimmers of all ages — from McPherson, Lindsborg and even Wilson — gathered to swim thousands of yards in exchange for pledges for the Mija Stockman family. Mija, a teacher in the local school system, was critically injured in a car accident in December and is now recovering in Nebraska.

The top fundraiser at this point, according to McPherson swimming coach Bonnie Sue Fisher, is Shea Cook, a Smoky Valley student who competes for MHS. The most yards swam was turned in by Kyle Banam, who is a coach for the Aqua Pups. He covered approximately 4,000.

According to Fisher, all funds will be placed in the Stockman Family Fund at Peoples Bank. Donations to the fund are still being accepted.
