The McPherson High seniors weren't about to lose on Senior Night.

But they almost cut it too close.

MHS stormed back from an eight-point, fourth-quarter deficit to stave off vastly improved Winfield's spirited upset bid here Tuesday, 49-46.

All 18 of MHS' fourth-quarter points came from its seniors, including nine by Janae Barnes, who had been held scoreless through three quarters.

The victory pushed the Bullpups to 6-0 in AVCTL Division III and 10-5 overall as they continue to rule the league by a game in the loss column over Buhler. If they go on and repeat as champions, they can look back at this game as the decider.

"It pretty much boiled down to seniors making plays for us. They refused to lose," MHS coach Chris Strathman said. "They were making shots and making defensive stops. They just did a great job of coming back."

A disastrous second quarter led to the Bullpups trailing 27-18 at the half and they were down 36-31 going into the fourth quarter. It was 40-32 Winfield when Barnes scored four quick points, including two on a steal. MHS continued to apply the heat and finally Brooke Bate put it ahead with 4:45 to go, 43-42, on a circus layup in the lane. Winfield did tie the game at 45-all, but a Barnes basket at the 1:20 mark gave MHS the lead for good. It was a 3-point game late when the Vikings had a chance to tie, but a Breanna Pingry trey was off and the Bullpups escaped.

Hannah Willems, who scored the first seven points of the third quarter for the Bullpups, finished with 17. Abby Pedersen added 12. Courtney Griffiths led the Vikings with 14.

The MHS JVs rolled to a 63-36 victory behind 15 points by Bri Cooks, 11 from Emma Yowell and 10 from Madison Hoffman.

The Bullpup freshmen received 15 points from Yowell and 13 more from Jordan Bruner in a 48-32 rout.

MHS has a big nonleague make-up game coming up Thursday at Andale. The teams met in the Mid America Classic, with the Bullpups pulling away at the end for a 45-34 victory.
