EL DORADO — McPherson High wrestling coach Doug Kretzer was happy with the Bullpups’ 40-39 win over El Dorado Thursday night, but was frustrated at the same time.
The Bullpups received 30 free points as El Dorado was open at five weights. In actuality, MHS won just two matches on the mat as Todd Graber won an 11-3 decision at 145 and Kaleb Jost won by a fall at 170.
Receiving forfeit wins were Austin Eldredge at 106, Cole Kretzer at 113, Dylan Baldwin at 182, Ross Regier at 195 and Rene Banzcyk at 220.
“We continue to run into teams that have multiple open weights,” said Kretzer, whose team finished AVCTL Division III with a 3-2 record for third place. “It’s been frustrating this year in those matches, because we want to wrestle, that’s where you improve. The fact that we can field all 14 weight classes gives us an advantage in the final score, but the kids want to wrestle, they want to test their skills rather than receive empty points.”
Kretzer said what El Dorado had was of top quality.
“El Dorado only put nine wrestlers on the mat, but many of these guys are highly ranked,” Kretzer said. “I thought we wrestled El Dorado really well. We were really battling out there last night. Kaleb and Todd got wins, but really everyone who got a match really got after it.”
MHS completes the regular season this weekend at Remington. Regionals are next weekend at Colby.
