There’s just something about Senior Day that brings out the best in the McPherson High bowling team.

Both the MHS boys and girls posted big numbers here Friday on an afternoon where 12 seniors made their final Bullpup appearance at Starlite Lanes.

MHS coach Herb Halinski said his team was determined to have a big day that was filled with a lot of emotion.

“We wanted to send the seniors off well,” said Halinski, whose boys scorched the lanes for a 2,641 to win by more than 600 pins against a rebuilding Buhler team, while the girls had a crisp 2,237, also winning by nearly 600. “They had a good time with it and they were relaxed.”

For the boys, Carl Frazier was throwing howitzers for the second straight day with a 688 with no game less than 220. Also immense were Joel Morey (662, 258 high) and Jacob Helmer (634, 237 high).

The highlight was a 944 second set as the Bullpups counted games of 258, 237, 225 and 224. Records haven’t been kept, but it had to rank among the highest sets in MHS history.

“Is that what it was? I knew it was pretty good,” said Halinski, who believes his team is peaking at the right time.

The girls were a model of consistency with sets of 740, 752 and 745 as they won handily since the Crusader girls are rebuilding after being one of the state’s dominant programs in recent years.

Crystal Nutter had flames coming out of her fingertips through two sets before finishing with a 613. She started with games of 224 and 243 before slowing down. Jasmine Wann had a strong finishing kick with a 237 game to nearly reach 600, finishing at 590.
