Christner bowls first-ever 300

When Steve Christner started with a 139 game Wednesday night at Starlite Lanes for the Bad Habits team of the Jayhawk League, a 300 — which he had never accomplished — never crossed his mind.

Christner was better in his second game with a splendid 245, but he was just getting warmed up.

Christner unfurled 12 straight strikes in his final game for the magical 300 and admitted he had mixed emotions afterward.

"Some pride, some relief," said Christner, whose previous high was 279. "All my shots were in the pocket in that game. The 10th (frame) was my first Brooklyn. When I did that, I thought, 'oh boy, here we go.'"

Christner was excited after his 11th strike because there is an award for that. "Then I realized I had another one to go," he said. "I could barely stand."

Normally Starlite Lanes goes hush when a bowler closes in on a 300. But with the Wichita State game on television and many bowlers watching that in between throws, nobody was noticing what Christner was accomplishing. Also, he was at the far end of the lanes on Nos. 15 and 16, so he was practically performing in anonymity. "It was probably a good thing," he said.

Christner said in the Jayhawk League when a bowler has a chance at a perfect game, it's much like baseball in that everybody is supposed to stay in normal routine.

"I was just trying to ignore it," Christner said. "I had come so close before. I've knocked on the door many times."
