McPherson High product Seth Davenport crashed a three-run, first-inning homer here Saturday to spark McPherson College to an 11-2 rout of Mid-America Christian for the Bulldogs’ first win of the year.
Mac had lost 6-5 in the opener of the twinbill to extend its losing streak to eight.
Behind Davenport’s bomb, the Bulldogs struck for six first-inning runs and later had a four-run fourth as they emerged from their season-long funk with a vengeance.
Austin Russell, Taylor Werts and Dorian Shelton all had two hits, while Zach Wilson had the only other extra-base hit with a double.
All of that offense made it easy for Josh Grant, who went five innings to record the victory. Werts pitched the final two innings.
Mac dropped the opener despite roaring back from a 5-1 deficit. Two runs in the bottom of the sixth eventually tied the game, but Mid-America scored a run in the eighth to win it.
The Bulldogs were held to just four hits, two by Shelton. Jose Nossa ripped a double for the only extra-base hit.
Scott Hughes took the loss, though he pitched four shutout innings of relief before allowing the run in the eighth.
Mac will host the Bulldog Classic this upcoming weekend, with Central Christian College and Dakota State completing the three-team field. The first game is at noon Friday as crosstown rivals Mac and Central square off.
