The McPherson College women’s tennis team was dominant during its two weekend matches, dropping only one set against Stephens College and Barton County Community College.

The Bulldogs improved their record to 3-1 on the season.

On Saturday against Stephens College, the Bulldogs were all over the Stars from the beginning.

Mac grabbed a quick 3-0 lead after doubles and did not look back.  Sophomore Nichole Vorhess (Riverside, Calif.) recovered from a slow start in her first set to bounce back and cruise in the second set then edged out her opponent in singles play 5-7, 6-0, 10-8.  From there the rest of her Bulldog teammates coasted to grab McPherson's second shutout of the season 9-0 against Stephens College.

Barton County College gave a little more resistance against the Bulldogs in Salina on Sunday.  The Cougars’ top doubles duo of Ono/Codognotto jumped out to a quick lead against MC's top pair of the Vorhess sisters, but the Bulldog pair though was able to fight back from down 6-3 to force the tiebreaker against the Cougars.  The match became intense quickly as both teams upped their level.  The duo found themselves down early again, but came all the way back with aggressive net play and took advantage of service errors from the Cougar duo.  The Bulldog pair prevailed 9-8 (9-7 in the tie-breaker).

Top singles player Emma Sheehan (Fullerton, Calif.) faced a formidable player in Karina Ono, but was able to answer that challenge and never let Ono see a lead the entire match; Sheehan prevailed 6-2, 6-3.

Brooke Vorhess (Riverside, Calif.) followed with a great showing of her own taking down her opponent 6-0, 6-3 and Nichole. Vorhees fought through a heady opponent to get the 6-3, 6-3 victory for the Bulldogs. Claire Crossman (Orange, Calif.) dropped her first game of the season but ended it with a 6-1, 6-0 victory.  Teammates Brittany Gourlay (Riverside, Calif.) and Kara Wright (Wichita) were stingy against their opponents not dropping a game.

Mac hosts Kansas Newman on Saturday at McPherson High School, weather permitting. Match time is 10 a.m.
