SALINA — It will be a clash of the titans today in the Class 4A State Wrestling Tournament at the Salina Bicentennial Center.
Smoky Valley’s undefeated Austin Cook will take on Atchison’s undefeated Tyler Harris for the state championship at 170 pounds.
Cook, who did not wrestle last year as he was recovering from a concussion, won all three of his matches in convincing fashion Friday (fall, 6-1, 8-0) to make the finals. He’s hoping to follow in the footsteps of Trevor Whittaker, who was a state champion last year.
The Vikings’ Spencer Bird at 182 and Brix Brickey at 285 lost in the semifinals and still have a chance for third. Bird lost in overtime when he was called for an illegal hold. Brickey lost in sudden victory in his match.
The Vikes’ Caden Sare at 120 and Brandon Archuleta at 132 are still alive in the consolation round. Smoky Valley is tied for third in the team standings.
For McPherson High, Austin Eldredge was edged 5-4 in his first match, then was a 6-4 winner in his first consolation match to stay alive another day. However, he lost 10-1 Saturday morning in his first match.
MHS’ Kobe Unruh, at 160, lost 12-2 and by a fall to see his season end.
