LINCOLN, Neb. — Bethany College’s men's tennis team traveled to Nebraska over the weekend to take on Baker University, Concordia University, Missouri Valley College and Hastings College. The team won all four matches.
Bethany started the weekend by beating Baker 9-0 and Concordia 9-0 on Friday. It would then move on to beat Missouri Valley 8-1 and Hastings 7-2 on Saturday.
After the Swedes dominated the first day of competition, they went up against Missouri Valley, a team Bethany coach Vic Bateman expects to be a Top 25 team.
"The win over a very good (Missouri) Valley team was a solid win for us,” Bateman said “They are a very good team and I'm proud of how our team performed."
The Swedes were pushed at every spot, but they handled the challenge and played well to win.
Manuel Raga played exceptionally well for Bethany as he won 6-1, 6-0 in his singles match. Laurentsi Arakhamiya is looking to find his form, but he picked up convincing wins in his No. 1 singles and doubles. The Swedes’ depth showed in the MVC match as they looked strong deep into the lineup. Bethany did not drop a set from the No. 3 through 6 singles spots.
"I liked seeing how the guys responded to some non-ideal conditions we've played in early this season,” Bateman said. “We get to see who is mentally strong to overcome whatever obstacles they face. All three surfaces we played on were very different and our team was forced to adjust their style of play each match. We brought 10 different players and had a chance to see everyone in action. We were able to get a good idea where we are at and what we need to work on this weekend.”
The team will hit the courts again in Denver on March 13 when they face Metropolitan State College of Denver and Colorado State University-Pueblo.
