KCAC honors Swede football players

LINDSBORG — The KCAC has announced the 2013 Football Scholar-Athletes and Bethany College has nine representatives. 

To be named a KCAC Scholar-Athlete, an individual must be at least a sophomore in standing at the start of the season, maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.33 and letter in their sport.

The nine Swedes to receive KCAC Scholar-Athlete honors for football are Prestyn Altherton, Ethan Linden, Josh Villarreal, Tevis Linnebur, Cody Lyter, Nick Junker, Michael Hlavaty, Dustin Wheeler and Brett Crome.

Altherton is a sophomore Criminal Justice major from Wichita. Linden is a senior from Ellinwood and is majoring in Physics. Villarreal is a senior, PE Health/Wellness major, from Fort Worth, Texas. 

Linnebur, also a senior, is from Cherryvale and is an Athletic Training major. Lyter, a senior, is from Highland, Calif., is a Criminal Justice major. Junker is from Belleville and is a senior Social Science major. 

Hlavaty is a junior from Olmitz and is an Athletic Training major. Wheeler is from Arlington, Texas, and is a senior Criminal Justice major. Crome is the final Swede to be named a KCAC Scholar-Athlete. He is a junior from Bremen and is an accounting major.

"We are blessed at Bethany College to have nine of our players make the 2013 KCAC Scholar Athlete roster. These young men are a tremendous example of what it takes to be a true student-athlete. Our incoming players will strive to reach these accolades next season in an effort to leave an academic excellence legacy for the Swedes," said Head Coach Manny Matsakis.

The Swedes were represented by six seniors, two juniors and a sophomore. The league had 88 student-athletes named. There were 45 seniors, 24 juniors, and 19 sophomores. 48 athletes are from Kansas, 18 are from California, and 10 are from Texas.
