WICHITA — McPherson High’s Joel Morey took third place today and the Bullpup team did likewise in the Class 5-1A State Bowling Tournament at Northrock Lanes.

Morey fired a sizzling 725 — 226-265-234 — to finish behind only Jerod Hromek of Circle (773) and Ryan Franzen of Sacred Heart (741). Hromek had games of 247-289-237 and Franzen rolled 247-236-258.

MHS’ Carl Frazier earned a Top 10 finish with a 708, good for seventh, and he had the lanes abuzz right out of the chute with a tremendous 289 game that gave him the early lead. He had a 191 and 228 to close it out.

MHS’ team total was 2,712, which often is good enough to win, but it was third to Goddard Eisenhower (2,749) and Circle (2,744).

MHS finished well ahead of fourth-place Sacred Heart, which had a 2,588 after defeating the Bullpups last week in regional action.

Other Bullpup scores were Jeff Reed (22nd with 264-184-175 — 623), Brett Hartzell (29th with 193-189-224 — 606), Jacob Helmer (42nd with 173-204-189 — 566) and Austin Mitchell (135-205-179 — 519).

The MHS girls are bowling this afternoon.
