WICHITA — Chalk up banner No. 51.

The McPherson High girls bowling team will raise a banner in the Roundhouse after winning the Class 5-1A state championship Friday afternoon at Northrock Lanes.

The MHS girls join the 2008 boys’ team as Bullpup state team champions, which was the first year of the program.

The Bullpups, sparked by several big second games of the series, had a 2,443 total in what was a three-team shootout. Andover Central was second with 2,424 and Wichita Heights was third with 2,414.

The Bullpups won the championship despite not having Top 5 finisher. State veteran Crystal Nutter was the top MHS placer by taking ninth with a 629 (193-211-225). She was one place ahead of Mayce Nightingale, who picked a good time to have her best meet of the year with a 627 (191-253-183).

Jasmine Wann gave the Bullpups three bowlers in the 600s with a 187-214-226 — 627. Other scores were Makenzie Benson (27th with 159-214-187 — 560), Rhianna Smith (44th with 151-173-159 — 483) and Alexis Kieffer (65th with 117-146-157— 420).

Goddard Eisenhower’s Shannon Kane, just a sophomore, won the individual championship with a 215-191-277 — 683, five pins better than Great Bend’s Miranda Hejny (188-279-211 — 676).

Wichita Heights’ Becca King, who approached 800 last week in MHS’ regional at Salina, was 13th with 622.
