MHS girls draw Miege; boys to play Sumner

One of the great Class 5A basketball rivalries of all time will be renewed in Class 4A Division I on Wednesday at Salina’s Bicentennial Center.

McPherson High’s girls (17-5) and Miege (19-3) will meet in the first round of the state tournament at 3 p.m. The winner moves on to the 3 p.m. game Friday against the winner of Paola (19-3) and Andover Central (18-4).

On the other side of the bracket, defending state champion and undefeated Wamego (22-0) plays Mulvane (15-7) at 6:30 p.m., with Kansas City Piper (19-3) taking on Coffeyville (18-4) at 8:15. The two winners play at 6:30 Friday.

The MHS boys are the No. 1 seed with a 20-1 record and play Kansas City Sumner (10-12) at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. A win and they would play the winner of Paola (16-6) and Winfield (14-8) at 8:15 p.m. Friday.

On the other side of the bracket, Independence (19-3) plays Topeka Hayden (12-10) at 3 p.m., with Basehor (19-3) tangling with El Dorado (13-9) at 4:45. Those two winners meet at 4:45 p.m. Friday.

Championship Saturday is highlighted by the girls’ title game at 4 p.m., with the boys finals set for 6:15 p.m.
