Hesston boys top seed; girls No. 2

The undefeated Hesston boys, winners of 23 straight, will play 16-7 Wichita Collegiate at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the opening round of the Class 3A State Basketball Tournament at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

If the Swathers win, they play either Riverton (20-2) or Rock Creek (20-3) at 8:15 p.m. Friday in the semifinals.

On the other side of the bracket, Beloit (22-1) goes up against Wellsville (20-3) at 3 p.m., with Nemaha Valley (21-2) matched against Holcomb (20-3) at 4:45. Those two winners meet at 4:45 p.m. Friday.

The Hesston girls (22-1) are the No. 2 seed and play Douglass (18-5) at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. A victory propels them into Friday’s 6:30 game against either Cimarron (21-2) or Council Grove (19-4).

Riley County (22-1) is the top seed and plays Lyons (15-8) at 3 p.m. Caney Valley (19-4) and Nemaha Valley (19-4) square off at 4:45. The two winners play at 3 p.m. Friday.

The championship games are set for 4 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. Saturday, respectively, with third-place games at noon and 2 p.m.
