HUTCHINSON — Two more to go.
Hesston’s boys continued their quest for a perfect season and state championship Wednesday with a hard-earned 61-53 victory over Wichita Collegiate in the opening round of the Class 3A State Tournament at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.
The 24-0 Swathers will play 21-2 Riverton at 8:15 p.m. Friday in the semifinals. Riverton slid past Rock Creek 58-50 in its opener.
On the other side of the bracket, Beloit was a 52-46 winner over Wellsville, while Nemaha Valley outscored Holcomb, 76-66. Beloit, the No. 2 seed at 23-1, takes on 22-2 Nemaha Valley at 4:45 p.m. Friday.
The Swathers may have been feeling some nerves early as they trailed 10-6 after a quarter, but started to burn rubber in the second period by scoring 21 points to take a 27-21 halftime lead. The margin was nine after three quarters and the Swathers were able to protect that lead the rest of the way.
Tyler McCartney topped the Swathers with 15 points, while Wyatt McKinney and Ryan Schadler furnished 11 apiece. Rose Hill transfer Austin Waddell and Cameron Christian scored 11 apiece to lead Collegiate, which finished 16-8.
