HUTCHINSON — Hesston High is going to take over the Sports Arena tonight.

The Swather girls joined their boys in tonight’s Class 3A State Tournament semifinals with a 58-34 rout Thursday of Douglass in their first-round game.

Hesston, now 23-1, exploded to a 20-3 first-quarter lead and was able to cruise from there. The Swathers will play 20-4 Council Grove in tonight’s 6:30 p.m. semifinals, with the undefeated and 24-0 Hesston boys playing 21-2 Riverton in the following game.

It was again a three-pronged attack for the Hesston girls, as Kelsey Unruh and Cami Richardson scored 15 points apiece, one more than Caylee Richardson, who also hauled in nine rebounds.

The tournament has opened up for Hesston, as No. 1 seed Riley County was stunned by No. 8 seed Lyons 57-49 in one of the big upsets in Kansas. The other semifinal matches Lyons (16-8) against Nemaha Valley (22-2).
