HUTCHINSON — Hesston High has the brooms out.
The Swather basketball teams are hoping to complete a sweep of the Class 3A State Tournament today, as both will be playing for championships at the Sports Arena.
The Hesston boys are shooting for perfection. They improved to 25-0 on Friday with a 58-51 victory over Riverton, which advances them into the 6:15 p.m. championship game against Beloit.
The Swathers’ “Big Four” practically did it all, scoring all but two points. Wyatt McKinney led the way with 18, Ryan Schadler scored 15, Grant Raleigh supplied 12 and Tyler McCartney accounted for 11.
Hesston needed a huge fourth quarter to advance, outscoring Riverton 27-15 over the final eight minutes. The Swathers had opened the game with a 14-3 lick, but the Rams were sensational over the next two quarters with a 33-21 advantage.
The Hesston girls had a much easier time, cruising to a 42-27 win over Council Grove behind a balanced scoring attack, led by Kelsey Unruh with 11 points.
The Swathers, now 24-1 with the only loss to undefeated Wamego, play unheralded Lyons in a CKL matchup today at 4 p.m. Lyons, the No. 8 and last seed, shocked Nemaha Valley 48-39 in the other semi.
