McPherson College’s softball team needed to stop after the first game of its classic here this weekend.
The Bulldogs were dazzling in their opener before dropping three in a row, as they are now 3-8 against quality competition as they head into the Sterling Classic next weekend.
• Mac 5, Nebraska Wesleyan 0 — Mac pitcher Ciarra Archer was terrific by twirling a five-hit shutout and received offensive support from former McPherson Bullpups Mariah Wedel and Emily Davis, as they cranked two hits apiece. Cassandra Mereno added two RBIs. Archer walked only two and fanned two.
• Southwestern Christian 4, Mac 2 — One bad inning — a three-run fourth — cost the Bulldogs another win.
Archer pitched well, but an error led to the uprising. Jenna Kaiser threw the final 2 1/3 innings.
Wedel and McKenna Deckard had two hits apiece.
• AIB of Iowa 9, Mac 4 — Up 3-2 after five innings, the Bulldogs collapsed late by giving up seven runs in the final two innings.
Kaiser was 3 for 4, while Amanda Darrow and Makenzie Frank had two hits apiece and Davis knocked in two runs.
Archer took the loss, but a couple of errors hurt her cause.
• University of Science and Arts 11, Mac 1 — Don’t be fooled by the name, Science and Arts has a big-time sports program. It scored six runs in the first to take the wind out of Mac’s sails.
Eight different Bulldogs had one hit, with Whitney Miller’s double the only extra-base knock. Darrow had the lone RBI.
Kaiser took the loss.
