Brad Underwood’s Stephen F. Austin basketball team will be involved in one of those infamous 5-12 games of the NCAA Tournament.

Practically every year, a No. 12 seed upsets a No. 5 in the tournament.

Underwood’s Lumberjacks may be the best candidate to pull it off. SFA, which is 31-2 and has a 28-game winning streak, is matched against No. 5 seed VCU, which itself was once one of the mid-major darlings, advancing to the Final Four in 2011 under coach Shaka Smart.

The Lumberjacks and Rams meet at 6:27 p.m. Friday in San Diego.

Underwood is a 1982 McPherson High graduate and learned his craft under legendary Bullpup coach Jay Frazier, and wrapped up his playing career under the watchful eye of another legend, Jack Hartman.
