KANSAS CITY, Mo. — McPherson College’s baseball team was in great position to pull off an upset Monday, but Avila University charged back with four runs in the final two innings for a 9-8 victory.

Avila had entered the game 9-5 and took an early 5-2 lead. The Bulldogs, however, scored four runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to lead 8-5. They held that lead until the eighth, when the Eagles scored three runs to tie it, then pushed across the game-winner in the bottom of the ninth of the single nine-inning game.

The Eagle pitchers walked 10, as Mac scored its eight runs on just five hits — all singles. Two of them were by Zach Wilson, who had two RBIs along with Tom Potter. Jordan Slaton, the third Mac pitcher, took the loss.

The Bulldogs, who have played a difficult schedule, are now 5-13 heading into another highly competitive game today at MidAmerica Nazarene.
