Easy day for BC softball team

STERLING — Bethany College’s powerful offense led the Swedes to two run-rule victories Friday in the Sterling Invitational, 10-2 against Dakota State University and 9-1 against Huston-Tillotson University. 

"We put two full games together," Bethany coach Janice Esses said. "We had solid defense, hit the ball well and put teams away when we had opportunities to. We had a good day today. However, we need to make it a good weekend."

In the first game,  Kelli Traffas led the Swedes with two hits, two stolen bases, two runs and three RBIs. Jasmine Zaker added two hits, two stolen bases, one RBI and one run as Mariana Cerenio-Jordan had two hits, one stolen base, one RBI and one run. Emiil Causey tacked on two hits, two runs, one RBI, and one stolen base.

Stephanie Minder started on the mound for Bethany, throwing three innings and allowing two earned runs off three hits, one walk, and one hit by pitch. Kierstin Stolley came in as relief, throwing two scoreless innings while allowing one hit and one walk, striking out one. 

In the second game, Ashley Nicolich totaled three hits, three RBIs and two runs while Ashley Montoya tallied two hits, two runs and three RBIs. Minder had two hits, two RBIs and one run as Traffas added two hit, two runs and two stolen bases.

Stolley pitched the five-inning win for Bethany, allowing one earned run off four hits and two walks, striking out three. 

The Swedes are currently 15-16 overall. The squad finishes the tournament on Saturday with matchups against Briar Cliff University at 1 and 3 p.m., and a matchup against Concordia University-Seward at 7 p.m.
