The wind was blowing in here Friday, which meant the baseball doubleheader between Central Christian College’s Tigers and York College came down to pitching and defense.

Both teams had plenty of it during a split in what was CCC’s conference opener.

York won the first game 2-1 in what was a nine-inning game. The loss spoiled an outstanding effort by CCC pitcher Robert Hawkins, who went all nine innings and scattered eight hits, while allowing only one earned run. He walked only one and fanned five.

CCC was held to six hits, two apiece by Clayton Lacher and Alex Rodriguez. Lacher had the only RBI.

Zane Howard earned the split for the Tigers with a masterful pitching performance in a 3-0 Tiger second-game win. In the seven innings, he allowed just two hits and walked only one, while whiffing six.

The Tigers scored singletons in the first, third and fifth innings. Drew Schiesser had two hits and an RBI to lead CCC.

The Tigers, now 15-15 overall, hook up with the Panthers again Saturday, with the site Moundridge. First pitch on what will be a chilly day is set for noon.
