ROSE HILL — McPherson High’s baseball team began the 2014 season under first-year coach Steve Williams Thursday with a split against Rose Hill in AVCTL Division III action.
The Rockets won the first game 9-3, but the score was somewhat deceiving. Down 2-1, MHS committed an error in the bottom of the fourth that opened the floodgates.
Micah McCulley hit a two-run homer for the Bullpups’ main offense. That came in the seventh inning after Cody Starkel had doubled. MHS left 13 runners on base, as it couldn’t seem to get the key hit when needed.
Alex Ruxlow took the loss but allowed only two earned runs, five total.
McCulley was the man in the nightcap, pitching a three-hitter in a 6-3 MHS win to earn the split. Logan Schrag drove in two runs to lead the offense and Caleb Schmidt added two hits and scored two runs.
All the runs McCulley allowed were unearned.
"We have been working on a lot of new things and when that happens there will be some growing pains," Williams said. "Players are thinking about things right rather than reacting and that is going to make them heistant. My goal is that we are playing well in late April and if that happens, then we have a chance to be a pretty good team."
Williams was happy with his team's pitching.
"Alex and Micah pitched well," he said. "Alex pitched well early, but then got out of rhythm in the third and walked four. McCulley dominated from the beginning of the game. He was in control the whole way."
MHS did have nine errors in the two games, something Williams expects to be cleaned up in the games to come.
MHS split the JV games as well, both teams winning by 6-3 counts.
The Bullpups play Monday at Andale.
