Pelnar, Thompson are state champs; Kretzer an All-American

TOPEKA — McPherson is home to a pair of state youth wrestling champions.

In the USA Wrestling Championships this past weekend at the Expocentre, McPherson’s Tucker Pelnar and Landon Thompson were the best in the state in their respective divisions.

Pelnar won the state championship in the 8-and-under, 58-pound class, while Thompson was the champion of the 8-and-under, 80-pound class.

McPherson just missed having three champions, as Austin Eldredge was the second-best wrestler in Kansas at 14-and-under, 105.

Treyton Pelnar (8-and-under, 52) and Jaytin Gumm (8-and-under, 70) were fourth, while Austin Handlin took sixth at 10-and-under, 150.

Also competing were Ryder Norstrom, Lorenzo Cruzen, Collin Pearson, Devin Frantz, Jonah Scott and Landon Frantz.

• KRETZER EARNS ALL-AMERICAN STATUS — At Oklahoma City, McPherson’s Mya Kretzer attained youth All-American status by placing fifth in the USAW Women’s National Tournament on Oklahoma City.

She competed in the 97-pound schoolgirl division.
