MANHATTAN — It took McPherson High swimmer Katie Wurm one meet to punch her ticket back to state.
On Friday, Wurm met the state qualifying mark for the 50 freestyle at Manhattan as she took sixth place in the event to highlight the Bullpups’ performances.
“Last year as a freshman, Katie earned a spot on both state relays, surrounded by three seniors,” MHS coach Bonnie Sue Fisher said. “This year, she knows that she is now the one who needs to lead her teammates back to state.”
Wurm also was the anchor on two medaling relays that took fourth (200 freestyle) and eighth (400 freestyle). Other team members were Ellen Yowell, Amanda Starkel and Lindsey Moore.
The Bullpups were short-handed on the day, as expected standout Claire Denk and Shea Cook did not compete.
“There is no doubt that we will be stronger once these two girls are able to compete,” Fisher said, as Denk had a school play conflict and Cook is injured.
Fisher said Moore turned in a strong day.
“She did a great job on all three relays and had the biggest time drop in her 50 freestyle, taking off over 3 full seconds from her personal best from last season,” Fisher said.
As freshman, Fisher said Starkel and Kellsie Corrigan showed a lot of potential, as she’s expecting them to challenge state-qualifying standards.
