ANDALE — McPherson High’s softball team took the next step in its progression by splitting with longtime power Andale-Garden Plain on Monday.

A-GP has been one of the premier programs in the state and for the Bullpups to come away with a road split is a step in the right direction.

MHS hammered the Indians 12-2 in the first game, scoring six runs in the third.

Hannah Marshall had a triple and single to lead the Bullpups, while Madison Hoffman laced two singles as MHS totaled 10 hits in the game.

Nicole Cheek, Chelsey Kerr and Stephanie Farney all had two RBIs.

Marissa Axelson pitched four innings and struck out four, while allowing only two hits. Hoffman was nails in relief with a pair of shutout innings.

Andale-Garden Plain salvaged the split with an 8-5 triumph. The Indians jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but MHS pulled within 4-3 in the fourth and tied the game in the fifth. But Andale scored a run in the fifth and three in the sixth.

The Bullpups pounded out 12 more hits, including a homer and double by Marshall. Hoffman, Cheek and Jasmine Wann also had two hits, with one of Wann’s a double. Brooke Schrag also clubbed a double.

Axelson took the loss.

The Bullpups are now 3-1 and remain on the road for a third straight time next Monday when they play at Winfield.

In JV action, the Bullpups were a 14-0 winner in the first game behind three hits apiece by Gracy Feil and Paige Gottwald. Kaylee Hardin stroked a pair of doubles, and Gottwald and Elle Schrag had one apiece. No pitching stats were available.

MHS lost the second game, 13-4.  Gottwald had two more hits, one a double, and Amanda Linden drove in two runs.
