BROOKVILLE — Smoky Valley’s baseball team opened its season Tuesday against one of the better opponents on its schedule.
The Vikings lost 13-3 and 10-9 decisions to Ell-Saline.
The Cardinals scored nine runs in the second inning to key a 13-0 start after four innings of the first game. The Vikings showed some grit by scoring three runs in the fifth, but needed one more to extend the game.
Jordin Foth’s double was the big hit for Smoky Valley. Tim Ruble took the loss.
The second game was a heartbreaker for the Vikings, as Ell-Saline scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to rally for the one-run victory. The Vikes had scored two runs in the top of the seventh to take a 9-7 lead.
Ruble and Austin Lustfield had two hits apiece for Smoky Valley. Christian Hansen took the loss.
