HESSTON — Expected tennis power Hesston High opened its season in overpowering fashion Tuesday by winning its first invitational of the year.
The Swathers scored 42 points to leave the rest of the field far behind. Goddard and Wichita Independent scored 28 points apiece for second.
Other totals were Trinity Academy (23), Parsons (22), Trinity Catholic (13), Smoky Valley (7) and Concordia (5).
“I am very pleased with how we started as I thought we played well for our first time out,” Hesston coach Mark Dahlsten said. “The field was pretty deep and our kids competed really well all day.”
The Swathers were strong in doubles. The No. 1 team of Collin Martin and Isaac Penner took first (8-6 in the finals), as did the No. 2 team of Grant Dahlsten and Garrett Roth (8-4).
In No. 1 singles, Hesston’s Keegan LeFevre took second, losing in the finals 8-5 to Goddard’s Timio Lopez.
At No. 2 singles, the Swathers’ Gus Williams took third, going 2-1 on the day.
Smoky Valley’s top performance was a third from the No. 2 doubles team Alec Schneider and Trey Schneider.
