HUTCHINSON — There’s no question the McPherson area is a hotbed for basketball coaches.

When The Hutchinson News announced its Coaches of the Year today, the honors went to McPherson High’s Kurt Kinnamon and Hesston’s Matt Richardson. Both, ironically, are graduates of St. John High School.

Kinnamon led the Bullpups to the Class 4A boys’ Division I state title, while Richardson piloted the Swathers to the 3A girls’ state title.

Kinnamon had plenty of competition since his brother, Clint, led St. John to the 2A title and an undefeated season. Hesston’s Greg Raleigh led his team to the 3A title and an undefeated season.

McPherson’s Kyler Kinnamon was named to The News’ All-Area first team, along with Hesston’s Grant Raleigh and Wyatt McKinney. Rounding out the team were Player of the Year Dean Wade and Scott City’s Trey O’Neil.

McPherson twins Ryan and Peter Horton were named to The News’ third team.

Hesston’s Caylee Richardson was picked to The News’ All-Area first team. She was joined by Hillsboro’s Addie Lackey, Lyons’ Brenna McClure, Player of the Year Reagan Phelåan of Central Plains and Cimarron’s Morgan Ediger.

McPherson’s Abby Pedersen made the second team and Hesston’s Cami Richardson was picked to the third team.
