The McPherson USD 418 Board of Education today accepted the resignation of Steve Williams as head baseball coach during a special meeting.

The Board’s statement read:

“The McPherson Board of Education today accepted the resignation of head baseball coach, Steve Williams, effective immediately.

"Mr. Williams' philosophy on the treatment of student-athletes was not consistent with USD 418's policies and practices.

“USD 418 wishes Coach Williams all the best in the future."

Williams, who was in his first year as head coach, had been suspended with pay early last week pending an internal investigation. The former longtime Hutchinson High coach then told The Hutchinson News for its Saturday edition that he had resigned. School officials on Saturday would not comment on the report since it was a personnel matter.

Williams admitted to The News that he had used “inappropriate language” on more than one occasion. He did tell The News that he probably wouldn’t coach again.

The USD 418 board also announced that interim coach Grant Myers will take over for the rest of the season.
