OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- The Bethany College men's golf team traveled to Oklahoma City to participate in the Oklahoma Baptist University Invitational Monday, with the final round set for today.
The Swedes took two teams to compete in the invitational, and after the first day one team was in sixth place, and the other was in ninth.
The Bethany College B team finished the first day in sixth place. Matt O'Neill led the Swedes’ B team with an opening round of 69. The round left him tied for seventh in the individual standings. O'Neill started the day with a 35 on his front nine and finished with a strong back nine, 34. Olly Rubenstein finished the day tied for 17th. He shot a 36 on his front and back nine to finish the round with a 72 total.
The first Bethany team finished three shots back of their teammates after shooting a team total of 295. The Swedes were led by Ben Johnson, who was tied for third after his opening round of 67. Johnson finished his front nine in 32 and ended the day with 35 on the back nine. James Tisdale also finished in the Top 25 for the Swedes. He was tied for 25th, finishing the day with a round of 73. Tisdale’s rounds were 35-38.
"I was disappointed overall with the first team’s scoring. Ben played well and so did James but we need everyone to play well," Bethany coach Jon Daniels said. "The second team had good scoring from Matt, Oliver and Scooby. We took a step backwards today and I'm looking for our guys to respond and play better tomorrow. We dug a big hole today and we'll see how it plays out tomorrow."
Chengetayi Dziva Chikwari was the only other Swede golfer to finish in the Top 50 at the end of the first round with a 74. Chikwari shot rounds of 38-36. He was one stroke away from being tied in the Top 25 and two shots shy of being tied for 17th.
