WINFIELD — McPherson High’s baseball team will be glad to get home.
The Bullpups completed a six-game road trip Monday by losing narrow 6-4 and 9-7 decisions to Winfield to fall to 1-5 on the year. MHS hosts Circle at 4 p.m. Thursday for the home opener.
In the first game, it was 2-all heading into the fourth inning when Winfield scored three times for a 5-2 lead. MHS retaliated with a pair of runs in the fifth, but wouldn’t score again.
Alex Ruxlow had two hits, two runs and two RBIs, while the other Bullpups managed only two hits. One of Ruxlow’s knocks was a triple.
Micah McCulley took the loss, but only one of the six runs he allowed was earned. He struck out three and walked only one.
MHS appeared to be on its way to a split in the nightcap by jumping out to a 3-0 lead and later was up 7-1. But Winfield used a seven-run sixth inning to rally for the win.
Cody Starkel stroked a bases-clearing triple, while Griffin Myers had two hits and two RBIs. Ruxlow was the losing pitcher, fanning five in 5 2/3 innings.
“First game we struggled to hit the ball and too many errors,” MHS coach Grant Myers said. “Micah pitched OK, but we didn’t do the job behind him. Second game we hit the ball a little better and played better defense. We had that one inning in the sixth where we just could not get that third out and give Winfield credit, they hit the ball well. We are going to keep working and get ourselves ready for Circle on Thursday. Hopefully coming home will be good for us.”
The MHS JVs split, losing 2-0 before bouncing back for a 12-3 win. No game information was available.
