MHS softball team gains split

WINFIELD — Perhaps angered by letting the opener of a twinbill against Winfield get away Tuesday, McPherson High’s softball team pounded the Vikings 8-3 in the second game to earn the split.

MHS finished its season-opening six-game road trip with a 4-2 record, and it probably felt that it should have been 6-0 as it let healthy leads get away in both games. MHS will make its debut in front of the home fans on Thursday against Circle.

The Bullpups pounded out 10 hits in the second game, with Chelsey Kerr going 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Hannah Marshall smashed a triple and single, while Jasmine Wann had a double and single.

Madison Hoffman was in control on the hill to pick up the win. All three runs she allowed were unearned. She scattered eight hits and walked three.

The game was scoreless until the fourth when MHS struck for a pair of runs, then scored four in the fifth and two in the sixth for an 8-0 lead.

The first game was one that MHS let get away. Up 6-1 in the fourth, the Bullpups made some errors that led to a seven-run Viking inning.

Kiley Kerr and Stevie Stockham had two hits apiece. Marissa Axelson took the loss, though she fanned five in 3 1/3 innings. Hoffman took over and finished out and of the 10 runs they allowed, nine were unearned.

MHS’ JVs crushed the Vikings twice, 18-3 and 15-5.

In the first game, the Bullpups pounded out 16 hits, including three by Olivia Rettig, good for four RBIs. Paige Gottwald, Elle Schrag, Teagan Pacey, Grace Colaw and Amanda Linden all had two each. Pacey joined Rettig with four RBIs and both homered.

Elle Schrag shook off a shaky first inning to throw zeroes the rest of the way, as she did not allow a walk and fanned three.

In Game Two, Colaw and Rettig were both 4 for 4 with three RBIs apiece. Kaylee Hardin collected three hits, while Gottwald (two hits, two RBIs), Teri Yates (two hits) and Ashlee May (two hits) were other standouts.

May was the winner, with Schrag finishing up.
