NEWTON — McPherson High’s girls track and field team finished a strong second Tuesday to powerful Class 5A Newton in the Railers’ Invitational.

Megan Pedersen went 5-2 to take first in the high jump, while Christina Wankum won the 3,200 in 12:39.5. The Bullpups also received a second from Wankum in the 1,600, Alisa Becker in the javelin and Bri Cooks in the shot. Freshman Kamryn Collins is providing an infusion of speed by taking second in both the 200 and 400.

Newton won the event with 129 points and MHS tallied 100 to finish well ahead of third-place Kapaun (81 1/2). Salina Central (81) and Hutchinson (76) were others in the hunt in the 10-team event that included mostly Class 6A and 5A schools except for MHS and Buhler.

The MHS boys were ninth with 29 points with Kapaun (161) and Newton (111) finishing 1-2. Ryen Trost had the top MHS individual placing by taking fourth in the 800.

“Our kids did a great job competing tonight,” MHS coach Jace Pavlovich said. “Our girls finished second in a very tough meet.  Our guys finished ninth. The impressive part about our guys is that we did not have anyone finish in the top three, but we managed to score 29 points. That shows we have a good number of quality athletes.”
