BC golfers lead tourney after first day

WINFIELD — The Bethany College golf teams completed first-round action Monday in the South Central Kansas Spring Invitational.

The Swede men, with three golfers in the Top 10, are in first, leading Southwestern College by four shots. 

Matt O'Neill led Bethany with an opening-round 78, good for third in the very difficult conditions as 76 was the low score.

Jose Acevedo was next with 79, good for fifth. Ben Johnson also finished in the Top 10 of individuals with an 80, which ties him for seventh.

 James Tisdale shot 82, but that was good for 13th. Greg Miller added an 89.

The Swedes also entered individual medalists. Chengetayi Dziva Chikwari finished the day tied for 11th with a round of 81. Josef Loughlin finished tied for 13th place just one shot back with an 82. Lewis Blair (85), Jose Luis Lelo de Larrea (87) and Olly Rubenstein (92) rounded out the scoring.

For the women's team, Morgan Nelson led the way for the Swedes. Nelson is tied for 21st place after shooting a 103 on her first round. Arianna Bryant finished one shot back of her teammate with a 104, which is 23rd.

The final round is scheduled for today.
