SALINA — Hesston High’s tennis team, ranked No. 3 in Class 3A, stepped way up in class Tuesday to tie for third place in the Salina Central Mustang Classic.
The Swathers scored 37 points to tie with Andover for third place, trailing the host Mustangs (62) and Newton (48). There were nine teams in the field with Hesston the second smallest.
In singles, the Swathers’ Keegan LeFevre took fifth place while Gus Williams was 11th. In doubles, Collin Martin and Isaac Penner placed sixth, while Grant Dahlsten and Garrett Roth were ninth.
“This was a great tournament today,” Hesston coach Mark Dahlsten said. “Both fields were pretty deep. I thought we got off to a slow start, but rebounded well by the end of the day. We have not practiced much due to our heavy schedule, the weather and other conflicts and I think that is starting to show in some sloppy play. That being said, we competed hard in a very strong tournament and came out third, which all in all I am pleased with.”
Smoky Valley’s points came from its doubles teams. The team of Will Bochte and Trapper Bellah knocked off teammates Trey Schneider and Alec Schneider in the 11th-place match
