The principal performers in Tuesday’s soccer game between McPherson High and Valley Center are going to see a lot of each other in the next four years.
The Hornets started five freshmen and the Bullpups four. Valley Center’s freshmen played prominent roles in its 3-0 victory at McPherson Stadium.
Freshmen MiKayla Vega and Ariel Wolff scored first-half goals and another ninth-grader, Sammy Boese added an assist. Boese then added the Hornets' third goal for the only scoring of the second half.
Freshman Bethany Reeves was solid in goal as the Hornets have the making of a future power.
"I feel we should be able to hang with a team like that," said MHS coach Chris Adrian, whose team dropped to 2-5 on the year. "I think we're just as good as a team like that. Today, we did not catch a break. There was a penalty shot in the first half where I thought the girl hit it with her hand and we didn't get that one. We hit the post on a corner kick and it looked like we were going to score, 10 seconds later we're picking the ball out of our own net. That was a punch to the gut right there."
The MHS JVs and Hornets played to a 0-0 tie.
The Bullpups are scheduled to play Thursday at Newton.
