GARDEN CITY — The Bethany College golf team takes an 11-shot lead into today’s final round of the KCAC Championships at Buffalo Dunes.
The Swedes also have four of the top six golfers individually. Bethany was allowed to bring nine golfers to the tournament, five to compete as a team and four to compete as individual medalists. Including the medalist, the Swede have seven of the top 11 golfers in the tournament.
Bethany compiled a first-day 598. It had a 303 on its first round and a 295 in the second. Southwestern trails the Swedes by 11 shots at 609, followed by Ottawa University, which has a 635. Sterling College (645). Kansas Wesleyan University (647), Friends University (655) and Bethel College (668) round out the total.
Bethany's James Tisdale is in second place after the first day. He had rounds of 74-70 for a 144. Greg Miller is in third after shooting 79-71-150. Matt O’Neill (75-77-152) is in fifth and Ben Johnson shot 153 (76-77) for sixth. Jose Acevedo shot a pair of 78s for 156 and ninth place.
The Swedes also entered four individual medalists. Jose Luis Lelo de Larrea and Lewis Blair led the individuals with a two-round total of 154. Josef Loughlin is tied for 13th place after the first day with 78-80-158. Olly Rubenstein rounds out the Swedes golfers with a 161.
"We played average as a team and I am glad to have the lead after the first day," said Bethany coach Jon Daniels said. "We need to get off to a better start tomorrow. That is what we will talk about in our team meeting tonight. James did play well for both rounds today."
The final round is under way today.
