It’s still Bethany College’s men’s tennis team and then everybody else in the KCAC as the gap doesn’t appear to be closing anytime soon.
The Swedes, ranked No. 12 nationally, captured their 11th straight conference championship Monday at the McPherson High Tennis Complex with a 9-0 blanking of McPherson College.
Both teams had entered the match undefeated in the KCAC at 6-0, but the Swedes left little doubt they’re still in a class by themselves, though three of the matches were close.
“The men came out strong and swept the doubles, then clinched the match with Mensford Owusu and Michiel Van Den Bogaert getting convincing singles wins," Bethany coach Vic Bateman said. “McPherson has a solid men's team and we will likely see them again in the conference tournament and can't take them lightly as they have some very talented players.”
Maybe the big surprise came at No. 1 singles where the Swedes’ Manuel Raga knocked off the Bulldogs’ Rafael Bulnes 6-0, 6-4. Bulnes has been ranked in the top 15 nationally.
In addition to Owusu and Van Den Bogaert, also winning singles matches for the Swedes were Edgardo Tapia, Amir Rahbar and Aaron Moses Jr. Doubles teams were Raga-Tapia, Owusu-Moes and Van Den Gogaert-Rahbar.
The KCAC Championships are scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the Genesis Tennis Center in Wichita.
